Tomatillos are small bright green fruits encased in a papery husk, resembling a small green tomato. They are a member of the nightshade family, commonly used in Latin American cuisine, particularly Mexican and Central American dishes. They have a distinct tart, slightly sweet flavor, often used in salsa verde, a popular sauce in Mexican cooking.
Size: About 1-2 inches in diameter.
Color: Bright green, sometimes with purple hues.
Husk: Covered in a thin, papery husk.
Fruit: Smooth, firm, shiny, and slightly sticky.
Tart: A distinctively tart and acidic flavor.
Sweet: A subtle sweetness that balances the tartness.
Fruity: Some describe a fruity, almost citrusy taste.
Earthy: A slight earthy note is also present.
Not Tomatoes: Despite their name (“little tomato” in Spanish), they are not tomatoes and belong to the nightshade family.
